| Victory Theatre the first large theatre in Ukiah |

Opened in 1914, the Victory Theatre filled the hearts of the people of Ukiah for almost 50 years. After closing the Victory (now called The State) was transformed into a grocery store called the State Market. The Victory was demolished in the late 1970s to make way for a modern office building. All that survives is a portion of the southern wall, which is shared with the building next door. A section of this wall, covered in antique metal siding, can still be seen from Smith Street. Brick from the building was also saved and used in the new structure. Before the Victory opened in 1914, there were at least two other places where movies were being shown. One was located on the southeast corner of Church and State, in the McGlashan building (destroyed in the 1917 fire). The other was located in what is now Mulligan's Books, between Church and Alex Thomas Plaza, on the west side of State Street. |
