The Ukiah Grammar School was built in late 1800s. When, in the 1920s, the need for a new structure arose, the large wooden building was moved a few blocks to the north. This must have been an amazing site to see. It was finally demolished within a decade of its move so that a small housing development could be built. The building that replaced it was rebuilt in the mid 1980s and converted into the City of Ukiah's Civic Center. Only a few walls of the mission revival style building survive. Nothing of the interior was saved. The interior is modern and not in the same architectural style of the exterior of the building. Also, when the outside was restored, wheelchair ramps were added as well as a fountain. Luckily there are trees that survive that were planted shortly after the first school was built on this site. These trees include large redwoods and a magnificent, hundreds of years old, oak. Sadly, when the Civic Center was built, new trees were planted that block the view of the oak tree. City Manger Candace Horsely was asked to have the oak cut down, and she refused. The oak now serves as the symbol of the City of Ukiah. Hopefully someday the City will remove these s,all trees o that the oak can once again the oak can been clearly seen by the public. |
